Excel Mid Formula

Learn How to use Excel Mid Formula:

As name depicts, Mid Function is used to extract the characters from middle of the formula. Excel Mid Formula extracts the specified number of characters from specified position.

Mid Function Syntax: Mid(text, start_num, [num_chars])

Text: It is the cell or text string having the data to extract.
Start_Num: It is the position from where you want to start the extraction.
Num_Chars: Optional. It specifies number of characters to extract.

Example on Excel Mid Formula:

In below data, Production Code, Manufacturing Year and Manufacturing Location is mentioned in Column B. We need to extract Manufacturing Year that is in Mid of the Cell. Manufacturing Years has been mentioned in 4 digits.

Excel Mid Formula is used in Cell C2 (Highlighted with Yellow color) to extract Manufacturing Year. Text is Cell B2 having the data to extract. Start Number is 7 because Manufacturing Year is located at 7 position (after considering Space). Manufacturing Year has been mentioned in 4 characters.So number of characters to return is 4. Cell C2 has returned 2012 which is the Manufacturing Year of Row No.2.

The Same formula is copied down to all other cells where Manufacturing Year is required.
