# Excel Vlookup Formula

## Learn How to use Excel Vlookup Formula:

In Excel VLOOKUP formula, V stands for Vertical and LOOKUP means lookup. Vlookup is used to lookup values in a data table where lookup_value resides. Lets see Vlookup syntax and an example to understand how it works.

### Vlookup Syntax: Vlookup(lookup_value, table_array, col_index_num, [range_lookup])

Lookup_Value: It is the value to search for in the Table _Array (Data table). Lookup value should be in first column of the data table.
Table_Array: It is the data table where lookup_value is in the first column.
Col_Index_Num: Column Index Number is the column number in Table_Array that has the information you want to return.
Range_Lookup: It could be either True (1) or False (0). True or 1 is applied when you want an appropriate match. False or 0 is applied when you are looking for an exact match .

#### Example on Excel VLOOKUP Formula:

Below is the database of Department Heads from where we have to search for salary amount of employee code mentioned in cell B12. As of now it is Employee code – 10086. Example: Vlookup Formula

Lets find out the salary in above case with the help of Excel Vlookup Formula.

Lookup_Value: Cell B12 is the lookup_value because we are searching for more information on employee code mentioned in cell B12.
Table_Array: Range B4 : E9 in the data table where we have to search for more information on employee code mentioned in cell B12 (in our case it is 10086). It is important to note that employee codes should be there in first column of Table_Array/Data table. As it is highlighted above with Red color dotted lines.
Col_Index_Num: Column Index Number is the column number in Table_Array that has the information you want to return. In the above case, we want to return Salary that resides in Column No. 4 of Data Table. Make a note that we have to consider the column number of Data Table (Table_Array) and not the column number of sheet.
Range_Lookup: It is 0 (or False) because we have to go for exact match.
